In 2014, the first phase of the vision of the Great Eastern Greenway was fulfilled with the opening of the Carlingford Lough Greenway from Carlingford Marina to Omeath, a stretch of around 7km. For a decade already, this (relatively short) Greenway has been enjoyed by 10s of thousands of walkers, runners and cyclists, who have enjoyed the off-road, safe experience of travelling along the beautiful shoreline of Carlingford Lough
In 2018, the long anticipated 5.7km stretch of the Carlingford Lough Greenway from Dublin Road Bridge, Newry to Victoria Lock was opened. Running along bank between the Newry Ship Canal and the Newry River, the picturesque stretch of the Great Eastern Greenway connected one end of the historic Newry Ship Canal from Albert Basin to the canal lock where ocean going ships once entered Carlingford Lough.
Phase 3, to be opened in May 2024, will extend the Carlingford Lough Greenway from Omeath, largely following the trackbed of the old Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway line, to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, a distance of around 4km. We have published photographs of the construction and the progress to date, and for thing is for sure, it is a wonderful, wide greenway with amazing views
Phase 4, connecting the end of Phase 3 at Cornamucklagh to Victoria Lock, is likely to be complete in late 2024. It requires the building of a boardwalk along the stretches of the Newry River where there is insufficient land between the R173 main road (that runs from Dundalk to Newry ) and the Newry River. It is going to be AWESOME ...riding on a 3m wide boardwalk above the river. In many ays, we can't wait..but we'll have to and we will ! When complete, there will be a 20km safe off-road path from Carlingford Marina to Newry, a vision fulfilled ! But the ambition, the vision, takes The Great Eastern Greenway much, much further ...
